ArchivalResource

Case files of Confederate veteran pensioners, 1868-1955.

These case files were created as part of the application process by which Confederate veterans and widows residing in Ala. could obtain pension benefits from the state. The files generally contain the application for a pension and documents supporting the claim. Most applications note whether or not the pension was granted. Correspondence relative to the case is also included and covers topics such as the pensioner's death or whether the veteran was qualified to receive a pension. The Pension Commission replaced previous pension granting boards and commissions whose records are also included in this series. These predecessor agencies include the State Board of Examiners of Pensions (1899-1915) and the Board of Confederate Pension Commissioners (1915-1919).
